Hello you fabulously intelligent and sparkly people *bats eyelashes* I wonder if I could use the combined power of your amazing brains......I am writing stuff for the BiCon ball, and I'm having trouble thinking of heroines and heros that are people of colour for the period 1919-1939! All I can think of are musicians, singers and actors. When it gets to superheros, I'm sunk! Poot!

If you can think of any, please let me know so I can include them on Ball Stuff!

Thank you, you gorgeous humans you!

Hmm, what a tricky question!

Well, batman and superman both appeared in the very late 30s, so both apply just!

Oh dear LORD how I love pulp! You've got me on one of my favourite subjects here.

Doc Savage, the man of bronze.
The Shadow "who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The shadow knows!" twin pearl handles colt .45s as I recall
Biggles is a classic here as well flying scarf, goggles and that terribly british demeanour.
Flash gordon and buck rogers made their appearances in this period of course
Tarzan!
John carter of mars as well as most of edgar rice burroughs
If you cheat any use hollywood you could claim anyone from the Indiana Jones films as they're set in this period.
King of the rocket men for the rocketeer type affair
In fact the rocketeer for the same reason as Indy above
Oooh sky captain! I'd expect to see at least one one eyed dashing sky fortress captain a la Angelina Jolie

There's plenty of source material and plenty that can be used for inspiration. i think that should keep you going for now.

All good suggestions but I think the key point is "people of colour". I think most of those characters are white.

Gah, my bad! Not enough sleep over the weekend meant I missed that detail.

I will wrack my brains and google to see what I can find.

In fact the thing to recall that the pulp era saw heroes and heroines that were truly whiter than white. Villains that were truly evil and irredeemable and no shades of grey.

Gosh, you've really got me pondering the pulp era now. Not so sure I'll be attending bison, a shame as I've a fedora and a sharp suit that's just dying for me to be an irrevocable corrupt gangster! Now, where did I leave my chicago typewriter?

*giggles* It's an amazing period, one I adore. I'm more into the Golden Age of Hollywood and music and Weimar Republic and all that, so this is excellent!

Oh yes, and of course literary James Bond was born out of this era. I can't remember his military service record, but I'm sure Fleming had him doing unnamable things in the name of Her Majesty during the second world war...

Are you looking for real people or fictional characters?

Both! It hit me as I was looking in superheros and could only find men, white men at that. There were people of colour in real life (Bessie Smith, Josephine Baker and Billie Holliday etc) but not in the fictional world annoyingly!

I realise it's horribly lazy, but http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1930s and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1920s both have lots of lists of things and people.
