Nirvana - godlike or shite?

I am firmly in the latter catorgary. I loathe them, I loathe 13yr olds walking around in 'I hate myself and want to die' hoodies (you were 3 when he killed himself - get over yourselves!). I think that the best thing about Nirvana was that it enabled Dave Grohl to get the Foo Fighters. And I think it is incredibly selfish to kill yourself, especially when you have kiddlings!

Also I think that someone I know is back on the Lush forum. Not sure tho, might be just a lot of coincidences.

Btw how many Fluidliners do you own now Chrissi? :-)

I wouldn't say loathe, but I remember wondering what the fuss was about at the time!

Nothing special, at all.

*giggles* I think people might think I am a troll though, people have mentioned stuff about people with no information in their profile being trolls. Hmm my profile is MY profile and I will choose whether I put something in it or not, it is not compulsory, so it is up to me. I am certainly not a troll though.

*grump over*

Is that the MAC liquid eyeliner?? Cos i cant live without it! Have never been able to put it on properly before without looking like a panda (or god forbid a Munchkin!).

It is! And I have always had eyeliner issues until I discovered this, pencil ones always ended up looking spotty as I could never draw a smooth line without pulling my eyelid one way or the other and liquid just ended up everywhere - up my lids, under the eyebrows the lot! Fluidline solved my eyeliner problems, hence wanting every colour!

GODLIKE...

you are not nearly old enough to remember how ungodly shite music was around then. It seemed that novelty records like the Birdie Song had taken over the charts (isn't your brother an accursed DJ of that ilk???), and then along came this snarling growling ode to Real Music, with Real Instruments, that they appeared to Play... Woot, dude.

And who says he killed himself? My vote's on Courtney...

Don't diss the lovely Courtney *grin*, I do remember the charts (I was only 16ish then!), but I also think that Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins etc were around at that time, and better than Nirvana. Yes they were a breath of fresh air, but they didn't do it alone!

I don't think PJ have EVER hit my radar, so can't comment. SP, I consider jolly good in a sort of REM Automatic For The People type of thirty-something-and-desperately-clinging-to-youth thang, ie nothing whatsoever like N.

I totally lost interest in music when that novelty dance shit ran amuck. I assumed I'd reached that age where all new music sounds like noise. Then totally by accident in a taxi (never took taxis), I heard Nirvana on the radio, and I wanted to jump out and dance. It made me realise there might be something worth listening to, even if it meant wading through a lot of crud to find it.

I did get a refund on my Belfast concert ticket when he died though, rather than keeping it as a momento like a lot of people. He wasn't buying a bullet on my cash.

10 yos in Cobain Ts is annoying. But then I used to have a Jim Morrison poster myself - and I can't even use the excuse that I didn't know about "My Little Red Rooster".

Hmm, I'd fall into the 'Shite' category, but not necessarily because of the music itself, mainly because of two things:

1) The aforementioned young 'uns with the Nirvana hoody tops (If the buyer is under 25 then when they approach the cash desk they should be given a blank piece of paper, if they can't name three other grunge bands that were around at the same time they can't have the top).

2) The fact that although we were allowed to listen to music in GCSE Art the tape deck was controlled by a music nazi who played Nevermind at us for, more or less, the whole year. Which worked like some crazy aversion therapy and to this day I must be one of the rare people who don't actually own a copy of the album.

As you say, the best thing that came out of Nirvana was the Foo Fighters.

I so agree with 1. I think it should be brought into force!

They were a great band, but he was a pointless article. If he hadn't minced his brains with so many drugs he might not have blown his head off.
Did a few good albums though.

I could never understand the fuss. I dont think they even did anything new even. Curse me now....

They're one of those bands who I love but hate their fans with a passion. Although a friend and I once decided that you could probably shoot a few of those kids with the "I hate myself and want to die" t-shirt's and your defence in court could be "they were asking for it... no REALLY"
The actual music though is great, and pretty important to the shape of 90's music in general.
